Why Hawaii Is Spending Years Trying To Eradicate Red Mangroves

A century ago, well-meaning agricultural planners brought red mangroves to Hawaii to fix a dirt problem. Today, conservation crews are fighting a massive battle to rip those exact same trees out of the ground.

If you visit the windward coast of Oahu right now, you'll see environmental teams targeting nearly two miles of waterways in Kailua. Their mission is straightforward: clear out thickets of the invasive red mangrove (Rhizophora mangle) before they choke out the remaining wetlands. It's a harsh reminder that importing foreign plants to "fix" nature usually backfires in spectacular ways.

Back in 1902, the Hawaii Sugar Planters Association imported red mangroves from Florida and the Caribbean. The logic of the era made sense on paper. Vast tracts of land had been laid bare by livestock and heavy cultivation, causing massive soil erosion and muddy runoff into coastal waters. Officials thought the dense stilt roots of the red mangrove would trap the sediment and hold the shorelines together.

They were right about the roots holding sediment, but they completely underestimated how aggressively the trees would take over.

Instead of staying put, the mangroves exploded across wetlands, streams, and fishponds. They changed the fundamental hydrology of Hawaii's coastal areas. Their tangled roots trap endless layers of mud, raising stream beds, slowing water flow down to a crawl, and destroying the natural drainage systems.

Water quality plummeted. Native plants that lived in open mudflats got crowded out by dense forest canopies.

The worst casualty of this botanical takeover isn't just the dirt or the water flow—it's the birds. Hawaii is home to several endangered native waterbirds, including the Hawaiian stilt (aeo), the Hawaiian coot (alae keokeo), the Hawaiian gallinule (alae ula), and the Hawaiian duck (koloa maoli). These birds rely heavily on open, shallow water and clear lines of sight. They need to spot predators like feral cats and mongooses before they strike.

When red mangroves form impenetrable thickets, those open feeding and nesting zones vanish. The birds lose their visibility, and introduced predators gain perfect hiding spots.

Eradicating these trees is absolute backbreaking work. You can't just spray chemicals everywhere in a sensitive wetland ecosystem. Crews and volunteers have to physically chop down mature trees, dig out root systems by hand or with heavy machinery, and haul away massive amounts of biomass.

This isn't a new fight, either. Conservationists have spent decades trying to reverse the damage across different islands. Back in the 1980s, a 20-year project at Nuupia Ponds on Oahu cleared 20 acres of mangrove to save the Hawaiian stilt, racking up thousands of volunteer hours and millions in labor costs. Similar grueling clearance projects took place at Kaloko-Honokohau National Historical Park and Heʻeia marsh.

The current Kailua initiative relies heavily on community participation. Schools, local groups, and private landowners are stepping in to pull up young seedlings and pencil-shaped seed pods, known as propagules, before they can take root. Once a section is cleared, teams immediately plant native Hawaiian wetland species along the stream banks to hold the soil and block new mangroves from returning.

Clearing the trees is only half the battle. Because mature red mangroves drop thousands of floating propagules that travel on ocean currents, long-term monitoring is mandatory. If you ignore a restored stream for even a couple of seasons, the invasion starts all over again.
